PAGAN RESOURCES GUIDE
by Tira Brandon-Evans
This guide is meant to be a resource for all pagans seeking to establish connections in their own communities and also for those who wish to broaden their horizons and learn what is going on in the pagan communities in distant places. Each listing begins with the title of the resource. The number of times per year that the publication is issued follows. Next there is a comment on what sort of format the resource is published in. There follows the price per single issue and the price for a year's subscription. Then the address is listed and following that is a short comment or review. Finally, the rating is given in the last word or words of the review.
EXAMPLE:
Great Pagan Magazine, The (This is the title or name of the resource.)
Issues Per Year: 4 (This is the number of times it is published each year.)
Format: Full Format - Glossy Cover (This describes what the publication looks like.)
Price Per: Single - £2.75
Annual - £10 to UK/£12 EUR/$25 US TO USA/£15 RoW
(The Price Per - above - has information regarding the price per single issue and for an annual subscription. This section may also contain some information in regards to how that payment should be made.)
Address: PO Box 123, Anywhere, Someshire, SN10 2TS, UK
(The Address section contains the address of the resource and may have some other information regarding how your correspondence should be addressed.)
This is an interesting publication. (The comments and review are below the address.)
Good. (The final words, such as Good, Very Good, Very Very Good, Excellent, etc. are the rating given the publication by the reviewer.)
HELPFUL HINTS:
(If you already know everything there is to know about IMO's, IRC''s, SAE's, SASE's and exchange rates you should skip this section.)
Most listings will state a variety of ways in which the publication may be ordered and paid for. £5 UK to UK/$7 US to USA, for instance, means: If you live in the UK you may send £5 to the address to order the publication and if you live in the USA you may send $7 in US Funds. RoW means Rest of World. A listing that states £5 UK/£7 USA & Canada/£10 RoW means: If you live in the UK you should send the publisher £5; if you live in the USA or Canada you should send the publisher £7 (or equivalent - see following paragraphs); if you live anywhere else in the world other than the UK, the USA or Canada, you live in the Rest of World and should send the publisher £10.
SAE & SASE:
SAE, means Self-addressed Envelope. SASE, means Self-addressed Stamped Envelope. A Self-addressed Envelope is an envelope on which you write your own address and then send to someone so that when they reply to you they can use your envelope and save themselves time and expense.
A Self-addressed Stamped Envelope - SASE - is a SAE on which you have placed a stamp. If you live outside of the country to which you are sending the SASE the stamp will not be honoured by the foreign post office. For instance, if you live in the USA and send a SASE with a USA stamp on it to Canada, Mexico, Britain, Eire, France, Australia, New Zealand, or anywhere in the world other than the USA the posties in that country will not honour the USA stamp because USA stamps are for mailing letters inside the USA. This is the same for Canadians. Canadian stamps are for mailing letters inside Canada. UK stamps are for mailing letters inside the UK, etc.
IRC:
So, how does one send a SASE to a person in another country? One purchases International Reply Coupons - IRC's - from one's local post office. When the person in the other country receives the IRC they can take it to their local post office and be given one first class postage stamp of that county. In remote areas of the US and Canada one may need to order the IRC's from the post office and wait for them to arrive. An IRC is much more expensive than a stamp. Each one may cost several dollars or pounds.
POSTAL MONEY ORDERS:
NEITHER BANKS NOR POST OFFICES WILL CASH FOREIGN POSTAL MONEY ORDERS. If you live in any country other than the one to which you are sending the money do not send a Postal Money Order. The folks who recieve it will not be able to cash it and they will have to go to the trouble of returning it to you. I know what some of you may be thinking, "But Postal Money Orders are sooooooooo safe. She MUST be mistaken. Surely banks anywhere in the world will cash Postal Money Orders from MY country!" I assure you this is not true. Foreign banks will not cash a Postal Money Order from your country. Foreign post offices will not cash a Postal Money Order from your country. If you still think I am mistaken call you local Post Office, tell them you have a foreign Postal Money Order and ask the Post Person if they will cash the Money Order. Next, call your bank. Tell them you have a foreign Postal Money Order in foreign funds. Ask them if they will cash it. 99.99% of the time the answer is, "No". If your bank is among the .01% who will cash a foreigh funds Postal Money Order, ask them if there will be a service charge. You will be shocked and surprised at the service charge! Do not send anyone outside your own country a Postal Money Order, they won't be able to cash it. So, how do you send money to another country? You go to a bank and purchase an International Money Order (IMO).
IMO & CASH EQUIVALENT:
The banks in most countries do not like cashing foreign currency cheques (checks) and charge their customers large service charges to do so. Therefore, if you are sending money to some other country you will need to go to your bank and ask them to provide you with an International Money Order - IMO - in the amount required. So, if you live in the USA or Canada and you are sending money to the UK you should go to your bank and ask them for an International Money Order in the amount that you wish to send. If you are sending £5 (5 Pounds Sterling) you should ask the bank service rep to give you an International Money Order in that amount. You should be aware of the fact that £1 was equal to about $1.60 US dollars or $2.45 Canadian dollars on March 26, 1999 when this article was written. International currency rates change from day to day. One day a £ may be worth more than $1.60 US or less than $1.60 US. Your bank will know what the rate is. Your bank will probably charge you an additional service fee for the IMO.
If all of this sounds incredibly complicated, you may wish to just send cash. You must, however, call your bank to find out what the exchange rate is for that day. Here is a calculation to show you how to figure out how much money to send. Let's say the subscription rate on a magazine published in the UK is £1 per year and you live in the US and want to send US cash. The bank tells you that £1=$1.60. You should send $1.60 to the UK publisher. Most subscriptions are more than £1. Let's say the subscription is £5 and the exchange rate is £1=$1.60. You will then need to multiply $1.60 x 5, which equals $8.00. So you should send the UK publisher $8.00 in cash. If you are on-line, Yahoo! has a neat foreign exchange utility at www.yahoo.com. But please remember that sending cash through the mails is not guaranteed to be safe and you may lose your money. Neither the author, EarthsongS, the publisher, nor the Society of Celtic Shamans recommends sending money through the mails nor will the above named bear any responsibility if you do so and your money is lost in the mails. The decision is yours.
