ABOUT THE PICTURE

by Janet Pearson
"Now it is time to learn how to take a picture of the moon," I told myself. So, with tripod and notebook and pen I went out into the field. I diligently took photographs, gradually increasing the aperature, recording each time exactly what I had done. "Now I am learning how to photograph the moon." But wait, look at that tree. Look at the way the light plays off of it. Feel it's expression. Snap one of that one, too. And when the film is returned, there is the perfect picture of the moon. Number 8 in my notebook. Perfect exposure to reveal its intricacy. But wait. There at the end of the roll. I have learned how to take a picture of the moon. I have learned to listen to my heart. I have learned to express emotion through image. I have captured an essence of the moon.

Janet Pearson is a photographer among other things living in the Kootenays. She can't tell you what kind of camera she has or what type of film it was or what aperature and f-stop she used. You can take a look at her interactions with the elements at www.dragonsside.com.

ABOUT THE VERSE

by Tira Brandon-Evans

Hail unto thee, Jewel of the night!
Beauty of the heavens, Jewel of the night!
Mother of the stars, Jewel of the night!
Fosterling of the sun, Jewel of the night!
Majesty of the stars, Jewel of the night!

(Queen of the Night, Carmina Gadelica, Alexander Carmichael)

This verse if from the Carmina Gadelica. The Carmina is a collection of blessings, invocations, and charms collected by Alexander Carmichael in the latter half of the 19th century in Scotland. Although many of the verses are heavily Christian in tone, many others contain obvious pre-Christian elements. This verse, Queen of the Night, is an invocation of the moon.
